Step by step

How to perform Umrah

Umrah takes a few hours: put on ihram, walk seven circuits around the Kaaba, pray, walk seven times between Safa and Marwah, then shave or shorten your hair.

These steps follow the Hanbali school, which Esa follows. Other schools differ on a few details.

  1. Step 1 of 8

    Get ready

Before reaching the miqat (the boundary where ihram begins), trim your nails, take a full bath (ghusl) and put perfume on your body, not on your ihram clothes.

    • Men: two plain white sheets, one wrapped round the waist and one over the shoulders, and simple sandals.
    • Women: your usual modest clothes, in any colour, without a face veil or gloves.
    • If it is not a time when prayer is disliked, pray two rak'ahs (or an obligatory prayer) and enter ihram after it.
  2. Step 2 of 8

    Enter ihram at the miqat

Coming from Madinah, the miqat is Dhul Hulayfah, also called Abyar Ali, just outside the city. Make the intention for Umrah in your heart and say:

    لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً

Labbayka ʿumratanHere I am, for Umrah

Then begin the Talbiyah and keep repeating it, men aloud and women quietly, until you start your tawaf:

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

Labbayka Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna l-ḥamda wa n-niʿmata laka wa l-mulk, lā sharīka lakHere I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. All praise and blessings are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.
  3. Step 3 of 8

    While in ihram, avoid

From the moment you enter ihram until your hair is cut at the end:

    • Cutting hair or nails, and wearing perfume.
    • Hunting, a marriage contract, and intimacy between husband and wife.
    • Men: fitted or stitched clothing, and covering the head.
    • Women: a face veil (niqab) and gloves.
  4. Step 4 of 8

    Enter the Sacred Mosque

In Makkah, go to Masjid al-Haram. Step in with your right foot and say the prayer for entering a mosque:

    بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Bismillāh, wa ṣ-ṣalātu wa s-salāmu ʿalā rasūlillāh, Allāhumma ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatikIn the name of Allah, and peace and blessings on the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.
  5. Step 5 of 8

Tawaf: seven circuits of the Kaaba

Be in wudu. Men uncover the right shoulder. Start at the corner with the Black Stone: touch or kiss it if you can, or point to it from where you are, and say "Bismillāh, Allāhu akbar". Walk round with the Kaaba on your left, seven times, outside the low curved wall of Hijr Isma'il.

    • Men walk briskly, with short steps, in the first three circuits, and normally in the other four.
    • Touch the Yemeni corner if you can, without kissing it or pointing to it.
    • Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, recite the du'a from Surah al-Baqarah (2:201) that begins "Our Lord, give us good in this world".
    • Stop the Talbiyah when you begin. Make any du'a you like, in any language.
    Try it: walk the tawaf

Each circuit starts and ends at the Black Stone, on the gold line.

  6. Step 6 of 8

Pray two rak'ahs, and drink Zamzam

Men cover the right shoulder again. Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if there is room, or anywhere in the mosque, reciting Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas after al-Fatihah. Then drink Zamzam water, and if you can, go back and touch the Black Stone once more.

  7. Step 7 of 8

Sa'i: seven times between Safa and Marwah

Go to Safa. Face the Kaaba, raise your hands, praise Allah and make du'a. Then walk to Marwah: that is one. Marwah back to Safa is two, and so on, so the seventh ends at Marwah. At Marwah, face the Kaaba and make du'a again.

    • Men jog between the two green lights; everyone else walks.
    • Being in wudu is recommended for sa'i, but not required.
    Try it: walk the sa'i
    SafaMarwahGreen lights

Safa to Marwah is one lap, and Marwah back to Safa is the next.

  8. Step 8 of 8

    Shave or shorten your hair

Men shave the whole head, which is best, or shorten the hair from all over the head. Women gather their hair and cut a fingertip's length from the ends. Your Umrah is complete, and everything ihram forbade is allowed again.

While you are there

Places in Makkah

The places at the heart of the Sacred Mosque, and the sites of Islamic history around the city.

In the Sacred Mosque

  • الكعبة

    The Kaaba

The House of Allah, raised by Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them). Every Muslim faces it in prayer.

  • الحجر الأسود

    The Black Stone

Set in one corner of the Kaaba. Every circuit of tawaf begins and ends here.

  • مقام إبراهيم

    Maqam Ibrahim

The stone Ibrahim stood on while building the Kaaba, in a gold and glass case. The two rak'ahs after tawaf are prayed behind it.

  • حجر إسماعيل

    Hijr Isma'il

The low, curved wall beside the Kaaba. The space inside it is part of the Kaaba, so tawaf goes round the outside of it.

  • زمزم

    Zamzam

The well that sprang up for Hajar and her son Isma'il. Its water is served all around the mosque.

  • الصفا والمروة

    Safa and Marwah

The two hills Hajar ran between, looking for water. Today sa'i is walked between them in a long covered hall.

Around Makkah

  • جبل النور وغار حراء

Jabal al-Nour and the Cave of Hira

The mountain where the Prophet ﷺ used to go to worship alone, and where the first revelation came to him. The climb is steep.

  • جبل ثور

    Jabal Thawr

Where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr hid in a cave for three nights at the start of the Hijrah to Madinah.

  • مقبرة المعلاة

    Jannat al-Mu'alla

Makkah's old cemetery, where Khadijah, the Prophet's first wife, is buried.

  • مسجد عائشة

    Masjid Aisha at Tan'im

Where Aisha entered ihram for Umrah on the Prophet's instruction, just outside the boundary of the Haram.

  • منى ومزدلفة وعرفات

    Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat

The plains of Hajj, east of the city. Outside the Hajj season they are quiet, and many visitors drive through them.
